“Cinco Siglos Igual” by Leon Gieco

Solitude over ruins.
Blood on grain,
Red and yellow.
Fountain of poison.
Wounded shields.
5 centuries unchanged.

Liberty with no galop.
Battered, torn flags.
Pride and lies.
Gold and silver medals
Against hope.
5 centuries unchanged.
On this part of the earth,
History fell
As stones fall,
Yet some touch the heavens
Or are close to the sun.
Or are close to the sun.

Unlove, Unfound.
Forgive and forget.
Body with mineral.
Hard working towns.
Infancies empoverished.
5 centuries unchanged.

Loyalty over tombs.
Sacred stones.
God had no chance to cry.
A long nightmare.
Children of no one.
Five centuries unchanged.

Death against life.
The glory of a people
Disappeared.
It’s beginning, it’s ending.
Legend lost.
Five centuries unchanged.

On this part of the earth.
History fell
As stones fall,
Yet some touch the heavens
Or are close to the sun.
Or are close to the sun.

It’s flowers at dusk.
Revolutions
And though many are no longer with us
Never did anyone think
To kiss your feet.
Five centuries unchanged.

  1. you’ve brought one of Leon Gieco’s most incredible songs. I remember when I interviewed him, years ago, and asked him about the future of America Latia and he answered me by taking the booklet of the CD “Messages of the Soul” and began reciting the lyrics of Five Centuries the same. I’ve been saving to record this time. this post is essential and sensitive.

    • For you with love!!

      Messages of the soul

In my country every year there are 15,000 children who fly
like little angels with their wings on the good air
with the luck and calm to have not known anything
to keep them good perhaps God stole these souls

What do you think when I tell you about all that happened
Did you see that all things are known with time
free and still living the Catholic who blessed this
lost long ago his place in heaven

All the days it takes you to understand how this happened
will serve you in another time to be somewhat more free

They are the only words I ask you to hear
if I do not die of shame here today
for everyone equally someone awaits us
and there is no escaping the fact that you will weep

What immense dignity to continue to believe in life
when simply seeing a flower growing among the ruins

Your song was the wheel of the days that followed
your song went far beyond the death they gave you
do not be afraid we have turned our back on the horror
a somewhat calmer wind comes with a message

The dust of these streets turns a saint into a repressor
inflicts pain on the innocent and awakens the murderer
lump of oblivious ice and to say nothing about anything
how many Mirandas fall without seeing what is happening
you do not feel pain as your neighbour is struck
he who sends you to kill does it to feel more alive

They are messages of the soul
the whole truth very clearly wounds the cowardly
blond angel of death who did little for you
the hymn, Jesus, the flag, and the sun you saw.

What immense dignity to continue to believe in life
when simply seeing a flower growing among the ruins
