Mapping Out Freedom: Escaped Slaves Used Braids For Direction

The women would weave the maps in their hair, carving out paths with their cornrows. Some patterns were even utilized to deliver secret messages.

Braids. They are an easy, go-to style to up chicness, comfort, and convenience. However, for some escaped slaves in South America, braids were a survival mechanism and led to freedom.

Οι λεπτές πλεξούδες που είναι κολλημένες στο κεφάλι, μαρτυρούν την αντίσταση των γυναικών, οι οποίες αναζητούσαν για τους σκλάβους οδούς διαφυγής από τις φυτείες της Καραϊβικής.

Συγκεκριμένα, οι γυναίκες που δούλευαν στα σπίτια, συναντιόντουσαν στις

αυλές για να χτενίσουν τα νεαρά κορίτσια και χάρη στην παρατήρηση του βουνού, σχεδίαζαν στο κεφάλι τους ολόκληρους χάρτες με μονοπάτια!

Αξιοποιώντας αυτόν τον κώδικα επικοινωνίας, οι άντρες που δούλευαν στις χασιέντας ήξεραν έτσι ποιο δρόμο να πάρουν για να δραπετεύσουν!

During the Atlantic Slave Trade, many slaves were forced to shave their hair to be more ‘sanitary’ and to also move them away from their culture and identity.

But not all enslaved Africans would not keep their hairs cut. Many would braid their hairs tightly in cornrows and more “to maintain a neat and tidy appearance”.

Enslaved Africans also used cornrows to transfer and create maps to leave plantations and the home of their captors. This act of using hair as a tool for resistance is said to have been evident across South America.
