It’s on the east side of Skopelos, with an amazing view of the St Giannis Bell Tower, of the church of Aghios Giannis, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) sends out the three wedding invitations that set the plot in motion.

 

Shortly before reaching Glossa οf Skopelos, on your right, you come across a road that leads to the chapel of Ai Giannis at Kastri.
The chapel of Ai Giannis is at the top of a rock 100 m high and to reach it one must climb about 106 steps cut into the rock.

Before the road reaches the sea, there is a tap with water at the chapel of Panagia.

 

Λίγο πριν φτάσετε στην Γλώσσα της Σκοπέλου, συναντάτε στο δεξί σας χέρι, έναν δρόμο που οδηγεί στο εκκλησάκι του Αϊ Γιάννη στο Καστρί. Το εκκλησάκι του Αϊ Γιάννη βρίσκεται στην κορυφή ενός βράχου ύψους περίπου 100 μ. και για να φτάσει κανείς πρέπει να ανέβει περίπου 106 σκαλοπάτια λαξευμένα πάνω στο βράχο.

Προτού ο δρόμος φθάσει στη θάλασσα, στο εκκλησάκι της Παναγίας υπάρχει βρύση με νερό.

The visitor climbs up a well protected staircase cut into the rock. The view from the top is mesmerizing. The small, almost lonely beaches with their green-blue waters among the grey rocks add one more tone of beauty to the area.

Tradition has it that as a fisherman from Glossa was returning from fishing one night, he saw a light at the top of the rock. He would see it every night, until a woman appeared in his sleep and revealed to him that there is an icon at the top. When he climbed to the top, he found the icon of Saint John the Baptist.

Ο επισκέπτης ανεβαίνει από καλά προστατευμένη σκάλα σκαλισμένη στην πέτρα. Από την κορυφή η θέα προς το πέλαγος είναι μαγευτική. Οι μικρές, μοναχικές σχεδόν παραλίες με τα γαλαζοπράσινα νερά ανάμεσα στα γκρίζα βράχια προσθέτουν μία ακόμη νότα ομορφιάς στην περιοχή.

Η παράδοση λέει ότι κάποιος ψαράς από την Γλώσσα, καθώς επέστρεφε ένα βράδυ, από το ψάρεμα διέκρινε στην κορυφή του βράχου ένα φως. Το έβλεπε κάθε βράδυ, ώσπου εμφανίστηκε στον ύπνο του μια γυναίκα που του αποκάλυψε ότι στην κορυφή του βράχου υπάρχει μια εικόνα. Όταν ανέβηκε στην κορυφή βρήκε την εικόνα του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου.

Πήρε την εικόνα, όμως, όπου και να τη μετέφερε, εκείνη ξαναγύριζε πίσω στην αρχική της θέση, εκεί που τελικά χτίστηκε το εκκλησάκι του, που γιορτάζει στις 29 Αυγούστου.

Every year, when August comes, the islanders eagerly look forward to the 29th of the month. It is the day of celebration of the saint and it is a day of prayer, holiday and entertainment. Most people go from Glossa. The beautiful village becomes deserted… The older people set out earlier, to get to the rock early at sundown, to make sure they get a piece of land and reassure those who dont walk as fast.

They go to the festivities every year, for as long as they can… the road ends… The people in a line, one world near another they climb the steps. On each step there is pilgrim. On each pilgrims face there is a tear. A few more steps and they arrive in front of the church square.

Είναι η ημέρα της γιορτής του αγίου κι είναι ημέρα προσευχής, αργίας, αλλά και διασκεδάσεως. Από τη Γλώσσα πηγαίνουν οι πιο πολλοί. Ερημώνει το όμορφο χωριό..

Από νωρίς ξεκινούν οι γεροντότεροι, για να φτάσουν στο βράχο νωρίς με το ηλιοβασίλεμα, να προλάβουν να πιάσουν ένα κομμάτι τόπο, να ησυχάσουν οι σιγανοπερπατητές.

Πηγαίνουν στο πανηγύρι κάθε χρόνο, όσο βαστούν τα κότσια τους… Ο δρόμος τελειώνει … Μια σειρά ο κόσμος, ο ένας κόσμος κοντά στον άλλον ανεβαίνουν τα σκαλιά. Κάθε σκαλί και προσκυνητής. Κάθε προσκυνητής και δάκρυ. Λίγα ακόμη σκαλιά κι έφτασαν μπροστά στην πλατεία της εκκλησιάς.
