Rusalka …is a water nymph

Α slavic myth says that Rusalkas were alluring water nymphs known for their beautiful song. They probably originated as fertility spirits, associated with particular lakes and with the life-giving power of water.

But they were later said to be the souls of children who had died at a young age, or of women who had drowned themselves. Their song lured passers-by into the water.

One story told how a Rusalka left the water when she fell in love with a mortal prince. She had to lose her voice to survive in the air, but for a while she was happy.

However, her lover left her for a mortal woman and she faded away into the water once more.

It was told they are especially dangerous during the Rusalka Week, which happens in early June. Swimming during this week was forbidden.

Ritual banishment or burial of the rusalky took place at the end of the week. The villagers would throw wreaths in the rivers, and if it sunk, it meant death was near. In some cultures, girls would come to the forest on Thursday of this week and bring flower wreaths and ask the rusalky to bring them a lover.

Ένας σλαβικός μύθος λέει ότι οι Rusalkas ήταν γοητευτικές νυμφές του νερού γνωστές για το όμορφο τραγούδι τους.

Πνεύματα γονιμότητας, που σχετίζονταν με συγκεκριμένες λίμνες και με τη ζωηρή δύναμη του νερού. Αλλά αργότερα αναφέρθηκαν ως οι ψυχές των παιδιών που είχαν πεθάνει σε νεαρή ηλικία ή οι γυναίκες που είχαν πνιγεί.

Το τραγούδι τους τραβούσε τους περαστικούς στο νερό.

Μια ιστορία έλεγε πως μια Rusalka έφυγε από το νερό όταν ερωτεύτηκε έναν θνητό πρίγκιπα.

Έπρεπε να χάσει τη φωνή της για να επιβιώσει στον αέρα, αλλά για λίγο ήταν ευτυχισμένη. Ωστόσο, ο εραστής της την άφησε για μια θνητή γυναίκα και ξαναγύρισε στο νερό για άλλη μια φορά.
Λένε ότι είναι ιδιαίτερα επικίνδυνες κατά την εβδομάδα Rusalka, η οποία λαμβάνει χώρα στις αρχές Ιουνίου. Το κολύμπι κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της εβδομάδας απαγορεύεται.

Οι κοπέλες ρίχνουν στεφάνια στα ποτάμια, και αν βυθιστούν, ζητούν από τη Rusalka ένα σύντροφο!
