The French artist JR first made his mark in Rio de Janeiro , as giant posters of staring eyes started appearing on buildings in the city’s oldest favela. He was drawn there following the controversial deaths of three young men, amid alleged collusion between Brazilian soldiers and a drugs gang. But now JR’s work has made it on to some of Rio’s grander structures. Take a tour of the city with the artist himself, and meet the people who inspired him.
Women are Heroes
Noticing that in areas of conflict men seems to control public spaces while the women, who are invariably the pillars of the community, are much less visible in public life, JR seeks to pay tribute to the pivotal role women play in society by taking their photos and stories around the world. He and two friends travel to Monrovia in Liberia to photograph women who experienced the country’s devastating civil war.
Later, working in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, JR pastes huge photos of the faces and eyes of local women on buildings covering the favela’s mountainside (above). The Women are Heroes project extends to Kenya, India, Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Sudan, before finishing in Le Havre in July 2014 with 2,600 strips of paper being pasted to a container ship bound for Malaysia.

Yes Peggy i agree with you!!!!
The oft-heard phrase “city of contrasts” rings true when it’s said of Rio de Janeiro. A city that is as defined by its natural wonders and striking beaches as it is by its complex urban life, it is a place that offers a bounty of experiences for the intrepid traveller. If breathtaking beauty is not enough, there are more reasons why you should visit Rio de Janeiro at least once in your lifetime.
