Greta Thunberg nominated for Nobel peace prize

From 1915 until 1946, some 25,000 pieces of paper were exchanged between two major 20th-century artists. Painter Georgia O’Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz wrote each other letters — sometimes two and three a day, some of them 40 pages long. The correspondence tracks their relationship from acquaintances to admirers to lovers to man and wife to exasperated — but still together — long-marrieds.

The first volume of those letters has just been published. My Faraway One, edited by Sarah Greenough, features 700-plus pages of the couple’s correspondence, sent between 1915 and 1933.

In many European cultures, however, the dragonfly is associated not with blessings, but with evil. In Sweden, it is believed the presence of the dragonfly around you indicates impending injury or tragedy.

Various culture’s language may play a part in this dark dragonfly symbolism. In Romania, the word “drac” means both dragon and the devil, and when combined with folklore, can easily result in evil implications for the dragon-fly.

The art of ancient perfumery in Greece

In Greece,  perfume was already central to worshipping and pleasing of the gods and goddesses.  The Greeks believed that anything as wondrous must actually have come from the gods:  vast quantities were used in religious ceremonies, and those too poor to afford fragrance for funerals simply painted a perfume bottle on the coffin.

An entire book, ‘Concerning Odours’ – written by Theophrastus, ‘the father of botany’ – was dedicated to fragrance, its pages documenting spikenard, iris, cistus, rose, mint, myrtle, hyacinth, cinnamon and narcissus, among other perfume ingredients.

Bobblehead museum opens in Milwaukee

A new museum in Milwaukee may well hold the largest collection of bobbleheads anyone has ever seen, displaying more than 6,500 figures of athletes, mascots, celebrities, animals, cartoon characters, politicians and more.

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum recently opened and was the brainchild of friends Phil Sklar and Brad Novak, who started collecting the figures 16 years ago.

The Trivulzio Tapestries

The highlight of the Balla Room is an extraordinary cycle of tapestries representing the twelve months of the year.

Commissioned by Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, nominated Marshall of France and Governor General of Lombardy by the French authorities in 1499, the cycle was designed by Bartolomeo Suardi, better known as il Bramantino (before 1480 after 1530) and woven in Vigevano by Benedetto da Milano and his assistants.

Today’s living statues are actually part of a noble and historic tradition that dates back to the tableaux vivants – or living pictures – of the early medieval period. In the tableaux, costumed actors would create a scene by remaining silent and motionless, as if they were in a picture.

Over time, actors took the tableaux out onto the streets. It’s now such a profitable business that there are ‘living statues’ in every city around the world.

Nespresso what else??? ….PENDANT coffee capsules

As everyone knows or should know, Nespresso capsules is a new waste stream that was just non-existent only some years ago. Now it is yet another source of waste that could be avoided (even if Georges try to sell you the much as he can).

In 2010 it was estimated that 10 billions of capsules were sold in the world (Nespresso and others caps). But these capsules gave some inspirations to crafters around the world and a lot of them transform them into lovely jewels.

Thiseio – Ancient agora of Athens

.

Thiseio is the name of a traditional neighbourhood in downtown Athens,northwest of the Acropolis.. Long ago, the name was derived from the Temple of Hephaestus which was mistakenly known as Thiseion in reference to Theseus, the mythical king of Athens, which gave rise to the neighbourhood being named Thiseio.

The area has many cafés and cultural meeting points Thiseio is served by the nearby Thiseio metro station.

The Agora was the heart of ancient Athens, the focus of political, commercial, administrative and social activity, the religious and cultural centre, and the seat of justice.

“With the gaze of the conqueror: Athens of Occupation in the photographic collection of Byron Mitos”  to be held  in Fetichie Mosque, in the archaeological site of the Roman Forum of Athens.

The exhibition is held in collaboration with the Museum of Byzantine Culture and with the support of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens.

Πώς αποτύπωσαν την Αθήνα στην περίοδο της Κατοχής οι ίδιοι οι κατακτητές; Ποια θέματα επέλεγαν να απαθανατίσουν και από ποια απέστρεφαν το βλέμμα τους και γιατί; Τι κρύβεται πίσω από την ηρεμία των ερασιτεχνικών φωτογραφιών που κατέληξαν να κοσμούν τα προσωπικά λευκώματα των στρατιωτών και αξιωματικών του γερμανικού στρατού;

Σε αυτά και μια σειρά από άλλα ερωτήματα, αναφορικά με τις συνθήκες που οδήγησαν στη φωτογραφική παραγωγή της κατοχικής Αθήνας, επιχειρεί να δώσει απαντήσεις η περιοδική έκθεση :

«Με το βλέμμα του κατακτητή: η Αθήνα της Κατοχής στη φωτογραφική συλλογή του Βύρωνα Μήτου» που διοργανώνεται από τη Διεύθυνση Νεότερης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς, σε συνεργασία με το Μουσείο Βυζαντινού Πολιτισμού .
