Saal-e-no mobaarak (سال نو مبارک) my sweet

Persian poem by the 13th century Sa’adi:

All humans are members of one frame,
Since all at first, from the same essence, came.
When by hard fortune one limb is oppressed,
The other members lose their desired rest.
If thou feel’st not for others’ misery,
A human is no name for thee.

Η Νηπιαγωγός | The Kindergarten Teacher

.

The Kindergarten Teacher tells a twisted tale of mentor and protégé, and displays Maggie Gyllenhaal’s immense talent. In this story, Gyllenhaal plays Lisa Spinelli, the titular teacher whose life isn’t exactly in crisis, but slowly stagnating.

Lisa’s home life is unsatisfying, her teenage children and husband emotionally distant. She takes the time to attend a weekly poetry class, but her work isn’t particularly good. It’s not terrible – just not great. It’s mundane, just like everything else in Lisa’s existence.

Lisa is coasting through life, until she notices that one of her students, five-year-old Jimmy, going into a kind of trance and reciting a poem that he simply shouldn’t have been capable of Continue reading

Spring Equinox

In ancient times, the spring equinox marks the time of the return of the goddess Persephone from the Underworld. Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the earth and, at the fall equinox, she descends downward into the Underworld to visit with the dead.

In her absence, Demeter searches in vain for her daughter, and becomes consumed by grief, causing all of the earth to wither and die.  The gods later intervene, bringing Persephone back up from the Underworld to reunite with her mother at spring time, thus the blossoming of the earth anew. Grecian history marks the story of Continue reading

Léo Delibes’ Lakmé: The Flower Duet

If the word “opera” brings an image of a fat lady singing and sends you running away, you’re missing out. Many operas are so famous that they’ve entered into pop culture. In fact, you probably already know more about operas than you think.

Lakmé is an opera composed by French composer Léo Delibes in 1881, based on the autobiographical novel Le Mariage de Loti by Pierre Loti (about Loti’s romantic liaison with an exotic Tahitian girl, how’s that for a premise of the novel?). The opera is famous for its complex and beautiful melodies. Continue reading

Stieglitz And O’Keeffe: Their Love And Life In Letters

From 1915 until 1946, some 25,000 pieces of paper were exchanged between two major 20th-century artists. Painter Georgia O’Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz wrote each other letters — sometimes two and three a day, some of them 40 pages long. The correspondence tracks their relationship from acquaintances to admirers to lovers to man and wife to exasperated — but still together — long-marrieds.

The first volume of those letters has just been published. My Faraway One, edited by Sarah Greenough, features 700-plus pages of the couple’s correspondence, sent between 1915 and 1933. Continue reading

Legend Of The Dragonfly

.

Today I saw the dragon-fly

Come from the wells where he did lie.

An inner impulse rent the veil

Of his old husk: from head to tail

Came out clear plates of sapphire mail.

He dried his wings: like gauze they grew;

Thro’ crofts and pastures wet with dew

A living flash of light he flew.

Alfred Lord Tennyson

6ir5dz8KT

In many European cultures, however, the dragonfly is associated not with blessings, but with evil. In Sweden, it is believed the presence of the dragonfly around you indicates impending injury or tragedy.

Various culture’s language may play a part in this dark dragonfly symbolism. In Romania, the word “drac” means both dragon and the devil, and when combined with folklore, can easily result in evil implications for the dragon-fly. Continue reading

When Adam stayed out very late for a few nights, Eve became upset.

“You΄re running around with other women,” she told her mate.

“Eve, honey, you΄re being unreasonable,” Adam responded. “You know you΄re the only woman on earth.” The quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by a strange pain in his side. It was Eve poking him about the torso.

“What do you think you΄re doing?” Adam demanded.

“Counting your ribs,” said Eve.

The art of ancient perfumery in Greece

GREECEIn Greece,  perfume was already central to worshipping and pleasing of the gods and goddesses.  The Greeks believed that anything as wondrous must actually have come from the gods:  vast quantities were used in religious ceremonies, and those too poor to afford fragrance for funerals simply painted a perfume bottle on the coffin.

An entire book, ‘Concerning Odours’ – written by Theophrastus, ‘the father of botany’ – was dedicated to fragrance, its pages documenting spikenard, iris, cistus, rose, mint, myrtle, hyacinth, cinnamon and narcissus, among other perfume ingredients. Continue reading

Odysseus and the Sirens

Sometimes a tempting offer is too good to refuse, even if it means risking one’s life

Sirens-and-Ulysses

Odysseus also encounters the famous sirens during his wanderings. Typically, in Greek depictions, the sirens they are half-woman half-bird creatures that perch on the rocks by the sea and sing beautiful songs that lure men who, refusing to leave, die of starvation.

In the Odyssey, Circe warns Odysseus about the sirens and tells him to plug his and his crew’s ears with beeswax in order to block their sweet songs from entering their ears. Being curious about the songs the Sirens sing, Odysseus only plugs his crew’s ears with beeswax and then has his men tie him to the mast of the ship, Continue reading

The Battle of the Oranges festival in Ivrea

If we look to the past, we’d see that this carnival is connected to the Lord of Ivrea’s attempt to take the virginity of the miller’s daughter on the eve of her wedding, sometime in the 12th or 13th century, as the legend goes.

But she made a bold move – a strike of the sword, and set the town free from his oppression. Continue reading

Satisfaction is a personal choice….

maxresdefault

There was once a stone cutter who was dissatisfied with himself and with his position in life.

One day he passed a wealthy merchant’s house. Through the open gateway, he saw many fine possessions and important visitors. “How powerful that merchant must be!” thought the stone cutter. He became very envious and wished that he could be like the merchant.

To his great surprise, he suddenly became the merchant, enjoying more luxuries and power than he had ever imagined, but envied and detested by those less wealthy than himself.

Pattachitra Art

Orissa, the land of Lord Jagannath is synonymous with the ancient art form, Pattachitra.

One of the many art forms to have survived over thousand years, Pattachitra can virtually act like a historical chronicle of our country through time. Simple and rustic in appearance, you will be surprised to know that Pattachitra paintings require immense patience, intense hard work and skilled craftsmanship. Let’s share some interesting bits of information about the art that are as mind blowing as the masterpieces the art has given us. Continue reading

Searching a peaceful shelter…

Where will I find peace
That puts my mind at ease
Where will I find the solace I seek
Would that help me scale happiness peak
I have searched the world
Only to find hearts so cold
People so insensitive n ruthless
My feelings seem so worthless
Tired of wandering & searching
A broken heart I was nursing
Ultimately I sought shelter in solitude
Numb with pain at the worlds attitude
Stop I Did often just to question
What actually was my intention
Tired of running away from reality
I found peace within my own entity

Living statues – the art of not falling over

Why standing still and not speaking for a living isn’t as easy as it looks

Today’s living statues are actually part of a noble and historic tradition that dates back to the tableaux vivants – or living pictures – of the early medieval period. In the tableaux, costumed actors would create a scene by remaining silent and motionless, as if they were in a picture.

Over time, actors took the tableaux out onto the streets. It’s now such a profitable business that there are ‘living statues’ in every city around the world.
