In the 18th century the Ndzundza Ndebele people of South Africa created their own tradition and style of house painting. Until the late 1900s, the Ndebele people were very fierce warriors and large landowners. In the autumn of 1883, they went to war with the neighboring Boer workers. The loss of the war brought on a harsh life and horrible punishments for the Ndebele. Through those hard times expressive symbols were generated by the suffering people expressing their grief. These symbols were the beginning of the African art known as Ndebele house paintings.

KOKESHI Handcraft tradition of Tōhoku

At the MUDEC – Museo delle Culture of Milan, an exhibition presents for the first time in Italy a large collection of kokeshi, small doll-like wood sculptures that are considered the cultural emblem of the Tōhoku region, in the north-east of Japan.

As for the most wooden artistic sculptures, even the production of kokeshi begins with the choice and the cutting of the tree. The manufacturing carried out on the lathe by the master craftsman is completed with a painted decoration that differs according to the schools, the era, and the production area.

Cannes Film Festival 2019 – The Story Behind Posters

Η ιστορία του Φεστιβάλ Καννών μέσα από τις αφίσες του

Since its origin in 1946, each festival has been memorialized by a new official poster. Visible everywhere throughout the city of Cannes during May, the posters have become synonymous with the festival itself with designs sometimes inspired by films, sometimes created by filmmakers and sometimes tributes to icons who’ve been part of the fest.

The poster for the 2019 Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) pays tribute to director Agnes Varda, who died aged 90 last month.

The poster shows Varda standing on the shoulders of a technician, shooting her first film La Pointe Courte in 1954 when she was 26 years old. The film would screen at the Cannes Film Festival the following year.

Imigongo … art from ….cow dung

Imigongo (Kinyarwanda: [imiɡoːŋɡo]) is an art form popular in Rwanda traditionally made by women using cow dung. Often in the colors black, white and red, popular themes include spiral and geometric designs that are painted on walls, pottery, and canvas.

 

 

The images are produced using cow dung which is put onto wooden boards in spiral and geometric designs. The dung is left to harden and is then decorated using colours made from organic material. The traditional colours are black, white, red, grey and beige-yellow but increasingly other colours are used.

Rainwater Collecting Installation Dazzles Like an Outdoor Chandelier

Situated in a clearing within an Italian forest, John Grade’s latest installation, Reservoir, appears like a chandelier glistening among the pine trees. Reservoir is featured in the Arte Sella Sculpture Park in Borgo Valsugana and is made up of five thousand clear droplets each of which is delicately attached to translucent nets, supported by tree trunks.

On designing Reservoir, Grade (previously) studied the Park’s ecosystem, carefully planning the installation in harmony with the surrounding landscape. “I became most interested in the way rain falls through this grove of trees, the canopy delaying the droplet’s journey to the ground as well as how quiet and sheltered the forest was during a heavy rain,” Grade tells Colossal. “I wanted to make a sculpture that responded to the rain directly as well as a sculpture that responded to people.”

Roman bullae were enigmatic objects of lead, sometimes covered in gold foil, if the family could afford it. A bulla was worn around the neck as a locket to protect against evil spirits and forces. Bullae were made of differing substances depending upon the wealth of the family.

Before the age of manhood, Roman boys wore a bulla, a neckchain and round pouch containing protective amulets (usually phallic symbols), and the bulla of an upper-class boy would be made of gold. Other materials included leather and cloth.

The history of the medium of wood engraving evolved from the oldest printing technique, woodcut—which, in Western culture, goes back to the fifteenth century. A wood block is cut from a smoothed plank cut longitudinally from the tree trunk so that the grain runs in parallel lines to the block.

Once the design has been established by cutting away the wood around the areas that will be printed, the block is inked with a small roller called a brayer. To print the block, a moistened piece of paper is placed on top of the block, along with a protective layer, called the tympan, and then put through the printing press. Alternately, a circular tool called a baren or even a spoon or the palm of the hand can be used to create enough pressure to print the inked block.

The art of ancient perfumery in Greece

In Greece,  perfume was already central to worshipping and pleasing of the gods and goddesses.  The Greeks believed that anything as wondrous must actually have come from the gods:  vast quantities were used in religious ceremonies, and those too poor to afford fragrance for funerals simply painted a perfume bottle on the coffin.

An entire book, ‘Concerning Odours’ – written by Theophrastus, ‘the father of botany’ – was dedicated to fragrance, its pages documenting spikenard, iris, cistus, rose, mint, myrtle, hyacinth, cinnamon and narcissus, among other perfume ingredients.

When walking past Warsaw’s Old Town and the Church of Our Lady of Grace, you’ll find a small statue that does not seem fit the setting. It’s a statue of a bear, seemingly asleep on the church porch.

This statue is said to be of Prince Mieszko, an adopted prince of Janusz I who was found in a bear’s den during a hunting trip. The legend says that as a todder, he protected the bear and her cubs from being shot by putting himself between the animals and the hunters, a brave move that convinced Janusz I’s family to adopt the child as their own.

The peepshow is a rectangular box; the interior is painted on three sides, as well as on the top and bottom

 

The sixth side is open; originally light would have entered the box from this side, perhaps through specially treated paper stretched across it. The Vatican unveiled its novel Nativity scene for Christmas in St. Peter’s Square Friday afternoon — sculpted completely out of sand for the first time.

The traditional scene depicting Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus surrounded by angels, shepherds, animals and the Three Wise Men was made with over 700 tons of sand and is about 82 square feet.

Is It Fashion, or Is It Art? Roberto Capucci’s Sculpture Dresses

 

Capucci is one of the most important designers in post-WW2 Italy. He opened his first salon in 1950, when he was only 20 years old, and achieved international success very quickly. Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe were among the celebrities who wore his dresses. His Nine Dresses dress featured famously in a 1950s Cadillac ad, too.

As Nine Dresses shows, his works have been highly sculptural since the beginning. They’re highly three-dimensional even when no one is wearing them. Many are based on an unusual, box-shaped silhouette. His works are highly geometric, and they have also been compared to origami.

The arrival of The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from February 10 presents a rare opportunity to see a work of art revered by specialists and enthusiasts alike. It has been called everything from the “Mona Lisa of the Middle Ages”, to “a national treasure of France”. Comprising six individual pieces and made around the year 1500, tapestries of such quality are rare, and few examples survive.

Tussar Paintings – History of traditional Odisha silk saree artworks

Tussar Paintings are commonly known as Patta Chitra and is quite a popular art in West Bengal and Odisha. It’s a traditional art done on a piece of cloth or silk sarees with Lord Krishna stories.

Patta means a piece of cloth and Chitra means painting. Various types of cloth materials are used for the patta paintings and the most popular cloths are gauze like cloth, tussar silk and so on.

“Like being in a dream”

Called Curiosity Cloud, Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler’s installation for Perrier-Jouët consists of 264 suspended blown-glass bulbs, each of which contains a hand-made model of an insect.

The installation lies dormant when there’s nobody around. But the bulbs light up and the insects inside start fluttering against the glass as soon as visitors get close.

The Pigeon Towers of Iran

During the 16th and 17th century, particularly around the time of the Safavid reign, the Iranian folks built a large number of towers to house pigeons. The pigeons were domesticated not for their meat (pigeon is especially revered in Islam), but rather for their droppings, which the locals collected and used to fertilize melon and cucumber fields.

In 2001, Russian artist Mihail Chemiakin constructed an unusual sculpture, “Children are the Victims of Adult Vices,” depicting two unaware children playing as 13 evil statues surround them.

Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, is sending its acclaimed art collection to Ireland in 2018.

The works will go to Dublin Castle and Skibbereen—diametric epicenters of the Great Famine (1845-52)— as well as Derry, for the exhibition Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger.

The museum’s collection, the only one of its kind in the world, constitutes an incomparable direct link to the past of almost 6.5 million Irish and 40 million Irish-American people.

Jenny’s Bowker quilts tell tales about people in the Middle East

Jenny Bowker has been named in the 2018 Queen’s birthday honours for services to Australia-Middle East cultural relations thanks to her extraordinary works of traditional craft

 

[Through my quilts], I wanted people to look into the eyes of some of the people I knew – who were not well off – and see that they were gentle.”

A Bedouin guide in Egypt’s White Desert in Farafra features in one of Jenny Bowker’s quilts. “People always ask me how long these quilts take to make,” she tells us. “And what they’re really acknowledging and admiring is that I was willing to spend as much as two years on the work. There are things that you can do with fabric, which make it more meaningful, more evocative, more interesting than a painting.”

Δεν έχει ακόμα διευκρινιστεί πότε έφτασε η τεχνική στην Ινδονησία, αλλά το 17ο αιώνα υπάρχουν ήδη ενδείξεις εισαγωγικού και εξαγωγικού εμπορίου μπατίκ σε αυτή τη χώρα.

Τις πρόσφατες δεκαετίες, το μπατίκ κερδίζει συνεχώς έδαφος στις προτιμήσεις του κοινού, και αποτελεί πλέον σύμβολο της ινδονησιακής εθνικής ταυτότητας.

Άνοιξε το Ίδρυμα Αλμπέρτο Τζακομέττι  στις 20 Ιουνίου 2018 στο Παρίσι

Αυτός θα είναι ένας νέος χώρος, αφιερωμένος στο έργο του Αλμπέρτο Τζακομέττι και σε εκθέσεις, καθώς και στην ιστορική έρευνα και την παιδαγωγική της τέχνης.

Το καινοτόμο πολιτιστικό ίδρυμα στοχεύει να προσφέρει νέες προοπτικές για το έργο του καλλιτέχνη και την περίοδο της δημιουργίας του. Με έκταση 350 τετραγωνικά μέτρα, το Ινστιτούτο θα βρίσκεται στην ιστορική περιοχή Montparnasse, όπου ο καλλιτέχνης έζησε και εργάστηκε καθ ‘όλη τη διάρκεια της καριέρας του.

Με πάνω από 300 γλυπτά, 90 έργα ζωγραφικής και χιλιάδες έργα σε χαρτί, διαθέτει την πλουσιότερη συλλογή έργων τέχνης του καλλιτέχνη στον κόσμο. Το ίδρυμα κατέχει επίσης μια αξιόλογη συλλογή φωτογραφιών και αρχειακό υλικό. Ένα μεγάλο μέρος αυτής της κληρονομιάς παρέμεινε απρόσιτο για το κοινό από τον θάνατο του καλλιτέχνη το 1966.

Horseshoe Art

Αλμπάνηδες ή καλιγωτές ή πεταλωτές, ονομάζονταν οι τεχνίτες που αναλάμβαναν την τοποθέτηση πετάλων στις οπλές των υποζυγίων (αλόγων, γαϊδουριών, μουλαριών, βοδιών), που χρησιμοποιούνταν σε αγροτικές ή/και άλλες εργασίες.

Σκοπός του καλιγώματος είναι η προφύλαξη του πέλματος των υποζυγίων και η διατήρηση της ευστάθειάς τους. Η διαδικασία διαρκούσε περίπου 15 – 25 λεπτά (και για τα τέσσερα πέταλα) και επαναλαμβανόταν σε τακτά χρονικά διαστήματα, ανάλογα με τη συχνότητα και το είδος των υπηρεσιών που πρόσφερε, αλλά και το έδαφος όπου βάδιζε συνήθως κάθε ζώο. Πάντως το φθινόπωρο, λόγω των εποχιακών γεωργικών δραστηριοτήτων υπήρχε αύξηση της ζήτησης για πεταλωτές.

Οι γλαύκες της Αφροδίτης Λίτη στο Νομισματικό μουσείο

Στις 7 Ιουνίου  στο Νομισματικό Μουσείο Αθηνών, εγκαινιάστηκε η έκθεση:  «Οι Γλαύκες και η Αθηναϊκή Δημοκρατία. Από την Αρχαία Νομισματική στη Σύγχρονη Γλυπτική».

Αφορμή για την έκθεση, που πραγματοποιείται στην αίθουσα «Μάντω Οικονομίδου» του Ιλίου Μελάθρου σε συνεργασία με την καταξιωμένη γλύπτρια Αφροδίτη Λίτη, καθηγήτρια της ΑΣΚΤ, αποτελεί ο πανελλαδικής εμβέλειας εορτασμός των Πράσινων Πολιτιστικών Διαδρομών στον οποίο το Νομισματικό Μουσείο συμμετέχει δυναμικά τα έξι τελευταία χρόνια.

Η έκθεση εντάσσεται στις καινοτόμες δράσεις του Νομισματικού Μουσείου που ως στόχο έχουν τόσο το διαπολιτιστικό διάλογο, όσο και την προβολή στο ευρύ κοινό της πολιτιστικής μας κληρονομιάς, όπως αυτή καταγράφεται σε αρχαία τέχνεργα, αλλά και σύγχρονα έργα τέχνης.

«Η κεραμική ενώνει»

 

 

Με αφορμή το Ευρωπαϊκό έτος Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς 2018 παρουσιάζεται στο Κέντρο Μελέτης Νεώτερης Κεραμεικής – Ίδρυμα οικ. Γ. Ψαρόπουλου περιοδική έκθεση με θέμα «Η κεραμική ενώνει» σε συνεργασία με την Πρεσβεία της Ουγγαρίας και την Πρεσβεία της Λετονίας.

Η έκθεση περιλαμβάνει την ενότητα  Κεραμική και συντεχνία με έργα κεραμικά και χαρακτικά του Ούγγρου καλλιτέχνη Janos Lipovics, καθώς και την ενότητα Ο δρόμος του Ηλίου με έργα πορσελάνης της Λετονής καλλιτέχνιδας KristīneNuķe–Panteļejeva.

Royal Academy of Arts’ summer exhibition

Τα 250 χρόνια της λειτουργίας της γιορτάζει φέτος η Βασιλική Ακαδημία Τεχνών (Royal Academy of Arts) στο Λονδίνο.

 

Η επέτειος πυροδότησε το μεγάλο σχέδιο επέκτασης και ανανέωσης των εγκαταστάσεων και του εξαιρετικής τέχνης ιστορικού κτιρίου της Ακαδημίας. Τα σχέδια για τη νέα μορφή υπογράφει ο διακεκριμένος αρχιτέκτων Ντέιβιντ Τσίπερφιλντ.

 

This year, the Royal Academy of Arts’ summer exhibition is celebrating its 250th anniversary, and the London-based institution is pulling out all the stops to make sure the event is a memorable one. Turner-prize winner and RA member Grayson Perry has been tasked with curating the exhibition, which features more than 1,300 artworks and will be open to the public from June 12 until August 19.

Τα βιτρώ στους καθεδρικούς του μεσαίωνα ήταν «η Βίβλος των φτωχών»

 

Εκεί αναπαρίσταντο ιστορίες από την Παλαιά και την Καινή Διαθήκη για να βλέπουν οι πιστοί και να οδηγούνται στη σχέση τους με το θείο.

Έναν καινούργιο οπτικό «οδηγό» στην πνευματική ανάταση του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου ετοίμασε ο Αμερικανός καλλιτέχνης βιτρώ Τομ Χόλντμαν. Με μια διαφορά. Οι αναφορές είναι και στις 25 θρησκείες του κόσμου μας. Και ο Χόλντμαν τονίζει ότι σε αυτό που ετοίμασε, η θρησκεία είναι απλώς μέρος της αφηγούμενης ιστορίας και όχι το επίκεντρό της.

Ζωγραφίζοντας με τη φωτιά

Η μυρωδιά του καμμένου ξύλου για πολλούς είναι μια ευχάριστη  ανάμνηση…
Σε συνδυασμό με τη Φαντασία και τη δημιουργική ανάγκη, η Φωτιά γίνεται ενα υπέροχο εργαλείο που ζωγραφίζει πάνω σε οτιδήποτε καίγεται…

 

 

Η πυρογραφία είναι μια τεχνική ζωγραφικής, όπου χρησιμοποιούμε δύο από τα αρχέγονα στοιχεία της φύσης… Το ξύλο και τη φωτιά. Μέσα από τη καταστροφή του ξύλου, καίγοντας το, κάτι καινούργιο γεννιέται. Είναι μία πανάρχαια τεχνική όπου αρχικά γινόταν με πυρακτωμένες βέργες και σφραγίδες καθώς και με τη θερμική δύναμη του Ηλίου.

Στις μέρες μας, χρησιμοποιούμε ειδικό εργαλείο με μεταλλική ακίδα το οποίο θερμαίνεται με ηλεκτρισμό και έτσι αγγίζοντας το ξύλο αποτυπώνει για πάντα το κάψιμο όπως το μελάνι στο χαρτί…

Τα “κεντίδια” του ψωμιού

Ας δούμε τα “κεντίδια” του ψωμιού με οδηγούς τις εκπαιδεύτριες του Λυκείου των Ελληνίδων Κερατέας, οι οποίες κουβαλούν με σεβασμό αλλά και αξιοσύνη αυτή την πατροπαράδοτη τέχνη, «κεντούν» το ψωμί με ζυμαρένια κεντίδια και σύμβολα, άμεσα συνδεδεμένα με την λαογραφία.

 

Στις μεγάλες γιορτές, στους γάμους και στις χαρές το ευλογημένο ψωμί, η βασική διατροφή των Ελλήνων, φορούσε τα καλά του και στολιζόταν με τα σεβαστά σύμβολα της αγροτικής ζωής.

Κεντίδια και πλουμίδια αναπαριστούσαν πάνω του εικόνες από τον αγροτικό βίο : ζώα, φύλλα και καρπούς από ελιές, κλήματα κ.ά. Το γράμμα Β συμβόλιζε το ζυγό του αλετριού και σχεδόν πάντα είχε στο κέντρο του ένα μεγάλο σταυρό. Τα ζυμαρένια
