Mardi Gras Indians (also known as Black Masking Indians) are black carnival revelers in New Orleans, Louisiana, who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by Native American ceremonial apparel.

Collectively, their organizations are called “tribes”. There are about 38 tribes. They range in size from half a dozen to several dozen members. The groups are largely independent, but a pair of umbrella organizations loosely coordinate the Uptown Indians and the Downtown Indians.

As a major southern trade port, New Orleans became a cultural melting pot.

The idea of a penis festival may sound ludicrous, but actually, it’s a Shinto religious tradition many Japanese folks take seriously. So there’s a solemn aspect to it, but you can also have fun there! Here’s how to enjoy it.

Where Does The Tradition Come From?

As is often the case, “matsuri” festivals in Japan are centered around a Shinto shrine. In Kawasaki, a suburb of Tokyo, there is the Kanayama (金山) shrine which encompasses in its premises the Wakamiya Hachimangu (若宮八幡宮), a kind of secondary inner shrine dedicated to the goddess of creation Izanami, which is one of the most important deities of the Shinto religion.

When she gave birth to her son Kagutsuchi, the god of fire, she burnt her reproductive organs and died. The Wakaiya Hachimangu is a shrine hence that is dedicated to sexual health. From the Edo Era, people prayed at that shrine to recover from STDs which were very prevalent in Japan at the time.

The Daffodils in Gerardmer – France

 

In fact within a radius of 10 km, the Daffodils cover almost all the meadows. The scene is stunning, as beyond this area “the hummer flower” (from its name given in the past) rarefies.

Daffodils grow in so large quantities around Gerardmer that they gave the idea for a flower parade that became a real popular festival gathering thousands of persons in the town streets.

Τώρα βέβαια είναι η πόλη που έγινε γνωστή από τους καταστροφικούς της σεισμούς που ευθύνονται για τους θανάτους πολλών ανθρώπων!

Κάθε Απρίλη με αφορμή το Qingming Festival γίνονται θυσίες για το νερό και μνημονεύεται η μνήμη όλων αυτών που έχασαν τη ζωή τους από αυτό!

Ching Ming Festival is one of China’s largest events based off of the lunar calendar. Ching Ming officially starts 104 days after the winter solstice. The festival usually begins on April 4th or 5th, but activities may start as early as 10 days prior.

In Iran, Norooz is an important holiday where all the schools are closed for two weeks.

Norooz started with the Zoroastrians but is now celebrated by many different religious. The Iranian calendar starts from the first day of spring which is March 21^st of each year. Close families gather around a special table or spread where every single item set on it has a special meaning that is wished upon the new year.

The Battle of the Oranges festival in Ivrea

The Battle of the Oranges festival is held in Ivrea, Italy, to mark the people’s rebellion against tyrannical lords who ruled the town in the Middle Ages. Revellers on floats represent guards of the tyrant, while those on foot are the townsfolk. They arm themselves with oranges and battle commences .

 

 

If we look to the past, we’d see that this carnival is connected to the Lord of Ivrea’s attempt to take the virginity of the miller’s daughter on the eve of her wedding, sometime in the 12th or 13th century, as the legend goes.

But she made a bold move – a strike of the sword, and set the town free from his oppression.

Mileștii Mici, Moldova annual Wine Run

Milestii Mici is the largest underground wine cellar in Moldova. It has more than 200 km of limestone tunnels, 55 km of which are used for storing wine. The tunnels’ depth varies from 30 to 85 m below ground.

Kissing under sprigs of mistletoe is a well-known holiday tradition, but this little plant’s history as a symbolic herb dates back thousands of years. Many ancient cultures prized mistletoe for its healing properties. The Greeks were known to use it as a cure for everything from menstrual cramps to spleen disorders, and the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder noted it could be used as a balm against epilepsy, ulcers and poisons.

The plant’s romantic overtones most likely started with the Celtic Druids of the 1st century A.D. Because mistletoe could blossom even during the frozen winter, the Druids came to view it as a sacred symbol of vivacity, and they administered it to humans and animals alike in the hope of restoring fertility.

Φάτνη από… άμμο στο Βατικανό

Αν και η άμμος παραπέμπει σε καλοκαίρι, ο ευφάνταστος καλλιτέχνης Ρικ Βαράνο σκέφτηκε να τη χρησιμοποιήσει τα Χριστούγεννα, για να κατασκευάσει τη φάτνη του Βατικανού στην πλατεία του Αγίου Πέτρου.

The Vatican unveiled its novel Nativity scene for Christmas in St. Peter’s Square Friday afternoon — sculpted completely out of sand for the first time.

The traditional scene depicting Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus surrounded by angels, shepherds, animals and the Three Wise Men was made with over 700 tons of sand and is about 82 square feet.

Festival of Lights Berlin

All major attractions are illuminated during 9 days in October and lighted up in beautiful colors.

You can take a special sight (light)-seeing bus that runs a tour to see the attractions!

 

Εντυπωσιακή ήταν η έναρξη του 13^ου Φεστιβάλ Φωτός στο Βερολίνο, αφού με ένα κουμπί ξεκίνησε το δεκαπενθήμερο σόου.

Μία γιγάντια ανθρώπινη μορφή από φως έδωσε το σήμα «εκκίνησης» του σκηνικού, ενώ φωτίστηκε ο πύργος της Τηλεόρασης.

Φώτα, πυροτεχνήματα, φωτισμένες επιφάνειες κτηρίων και γέφυρες της γερμανικής πρωτεύουσας θα παραμείνουν φωτισμένα κατά τη διάρκεια το φεστιβάλ.

Φωτισμένα θα είναι και τα μνημεία του Βερολίνου, όπως η Πύλη του Βρανδεμβούργου και ο Καθεδρικός Ναός.

Την επιμέλεια του φεστιβάλ έχουν τόσο Γερμανοί, όσο και ξένοι καλλιτέχνες.

Το Φεστιβάλ των Φωτός θα ολοκληρωθεί στις 14 Οκτωβρίου.

The National Day of Singapore 2018

The National Day of Singapore is celebrated every year on August 9, in commemoration of Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in the year 1965

Singapore until the early 19th century was a peaceful fishermen’s island. Then the British diagnosed his potential and in 1819 they founded a commercial colony there. The locals in 1963 decided to live free, and after being incorporated for two years with Malaysia (1963-1965), they thought better and were independent.

H Σιγκαπούρη μέχρι τις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα ήταν ένα φιλήσυχο νησί ψαράδων. Τότε οι Βρετανοί διέγνωσαν τις δυνατότητες του και το 1819 ίδρυσαν εκεί εμπορική αποικία. Οι ντόπιοι το 1963 αποφάσισαν να ζήσουν πιο ελεύθεροι και αφού ενσωματώθηκαν για δυο χρόνια με τη Μαλαισία (1963-1965), το σκέφθηκαν καλύτερα και ανεξαρτητοποιήθηκαν.

Ommegang: Το μεσαιωνικό φεστιβάλ της πόλης των Βρυξελλών

Η μεγαλύτερη πλατεία των Βρυξελλών, η Grand Place, έχει ντυθεί τα… μεσαιωνικά της με ιππότες, άλογα και γεράκια για να υποδεχτεί καλλιτέχνες ανάλογα ντυμένους στο μεσαιωνικό φεστιβάλ Ommegang.

Grand Place in Brussels, has dressed up … its medieval knights, horses and hawks to welcome artists dressed in the medieval Ommegang festival.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του 3μερου φετσιβάλ γίνεται αναπαράσταση της ημέρας της 2ης Ιουνίου 1549, όταν διοργανώθηκε στην πόλη μία μεγάλη γιορτή προς τιμήν του αυτοκράτορα Καρόλου Ε’, που επισκέφθηκε τις Βρυξέλλες εκείνη την ημέρα.

During the 3-day festival, a representation of the day of 2 June 1549 took place, when a great celebration was held in the city in honor of Emperor Charles VIII who visited Brussels that day.

Art Aquarium 2018

6th Jul–24th Sep, 2018 11:00am – 11:30pm

Officially it’s the “Eco Edo Nihonbashi Art Aquarium”. Started in 2011 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the bridge at Nihonbashi, the event has gathered quite a following as a summer event in Tokyo and is now in its 8th year.

Επισήμως λέγεται “Eco Edo Nihonbashi Art Aquarium” και ξεκίνησε το 2011 για να γιορτάσουν την 100ή επέτειο  της κατασκευής της γέφυρας στο Nihonbashi.

The exhibition features ornamental goldfish in various ornate bowls, tanks and ponds with colorful lighting and effects. Even on weekdays, it can be quite crowded. In general, it’s more a place to take interesting snaps rather than peacefully contemplate the art.

Η έκθεση περιλαμβάνει  χρυσόψαρα σε διάφορα περίτεχνα μπολ, δεξαμενές και λίμνες με πολύχρωμο φωτισμό και εφέ.

The Scarlet Sails is the most massive and famous public event during the White Nights Festival. The tradition is highly popular for spectacular fireworks, numerous music concerts, and a massive water-show including battle among tens of boats full of pirates on the waters of Neva River.

The Scarlet Sails show celebrating the end of school year 2007 was attended by more than one million people. In 2010 public attendance grew up to 3 million, and entertainers were such stars as Cirque du Soleil, Mariinsky Ballet and Antonio Banderas among others.

Διεθνής Ημέρα Γιόγκα

Με τη γιόγκα λέει ηρεμεί ο άλλος… μάλλον δεν έχει δοκιμάσει τσίπουρο χαχαχα!!!

 

 

Η Διεθνής Ημέρα Γιόγκα καθιερώθηκε το 2015 και γιορτάζεται κάθε χρόνο στις 21 Ιουνίου, ημερομηνία του θερινού ηλιοστασίου για το Βόρειο Ημισφαίριο.

Γιόγκα στα σανσκριτικά σημαίνει «ένωση», «σύνδεση», και είναι ένα πανάρχαιο φιλοσοφικό και πρακτικό σύστημα για την εσωτερική ενοποίηση του σώματος και του πνεύματος, του ανθρώπου και του σύμπαντος, του ανθρώπινου και του θεϊκού.

Royal Academy of Arts’ summer exhibition

Τα 250 χρόνια της λειτουργίας της γιορτάζει φέτος η Βασιλική Ακαδημία Τεχνών (Royal Academy of Arts) στο Λονδίνο.

 

Η επέτειος πυροδότησε το μεγάλο σχέδιο επέκτασης και ανανέωσης των εγκαταστάσεων και του εξαιρετικής τέχνης ιστορικού κτιρίου της Ακαδημίας. Τα σχέδια για τη νέα μορφή υπογράφει ο διακεκριμένος αρχιτέκτων Ντέιβιντ Τσίπερφιλντ.

 

This year, the Royal Academy of Arts’ summer exhibition is celebrating its 250th anniversary, and the London-based institution is pulling out all the stops to make sure the event is a memorable one. Turner-prize winner and RA member Grayson Perry has been tasked with curating the exhibition, which features more than 1,300 artworks and will be open to the public from June 12 until August 19.

Ward Creole Hunters Mardi Gras Indians

Ο Ινδιάνοι του Μαρντί Γκρα, είναι μια παράδοση των κατοίκων της πόλης της Νέας Ορλεάνης, η οποία έχει τις ρίζες της στα χρόνια της δουλείας στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες (γύρω στα 1700) .

Σκλάβοι αφρικάνικής καταγωγής οι οποίοι δραπέτευαν από τις φυτείες, έβρισκαν καταφύγιο και φροντίδα, σε καταυλισμούς ιθαγενών ινδιάνων (των φυλών Choctaw, Seminoles, και Chickasaws) σε ολόκληρη την πολιτεία της Λουιζιάνα.

Προς τιμήν αυτού του γεγονότος, οι αφροαμερικανοί κάτοικοι της νέας Ορλεάνης, ντύνονται με ινδιάνικα κουστούμια, κατά τη διάρκεια του Μαρντί Γκρά (της μέρας του Καρναβαλιού, περίπου αντίστοιχης με τη δική μας Καθαρή Δευτέρα) και παρελαύνουν στους δρόμους της πόλης.

Το βαλς του Απρίλη ~ Φωτεινή Βελεσιώτου

Aν γινόταν να κάνω μια ευχή σήμερα για τα γενέθλιά μου θα ήταν να μπορούσα να χορέψω αυτό το βαλς με τον καθένα από εσάς και εκεί επάνω στις στροφές του να σας δώσω ένα ζεστό φιλί για τη φιλία που μοιράζομαι μαζί σας !!!

Άνθρωποι, κορμιά σαν δέντρα,
είχαν μέσα μου ριζώσει,
άλλοι είχανε ανθίσει,
άλλοι είχαν μαραζώσει.

Μα εγώ ζητούσα έναν,

Εξευμενίζοντας τα νερά του Dujiang Dam στο Qingming Festival

Η πόλη της Dujiangyan στην Κίνα είναι διάσημη για το αρχαίο αρδευτικό της σύστημα το οποίο κτίστηκε 2.300 χρόνια πριν!

Τώρα βέβαια είναι η πόλη που έγινε γνωστή από τους καταστροφικούς της σεισμούς που ευθύνονται για τους θανάτους πολλών ανθρώπων!

Κάθε Απρίλη με αφορμή το Qingming Festival γίνονται θυσίες για το νερό και μνημονεύεται η μνήμη όλων αυτών που έχασαν τη ζωή τους από αυτό!

Ταϊλάνδη: Εθνική ημέρα ελέφαντα

 

Άνδρες προσεύχονται ενώ κάθονται πάνω στη ράχη των ελεφάντων, κατά τη διάρκεια της Εθνικής Ημέρας Ελέφαντα, στην αρχαία πρωτεύουσα της Ταϊλάνδης, Ayutthaya.

Οι Ταϊλανδοί τιμούν τον ελέφαντα με προσφορές φρούτων και βουδιστικές τελετές σε όλη τη χώρα, αποτίνοντας φόρο τιμής στο εθνικό τους ζώο.

Golden Eagle Festival Mongolia 2018

Ο λαός του Καζακστάν διατηρεί ένα από τα πιο θεαματικά και αρχαία γεγονότα που ονομάζεται Κυνήγι του Αετού αναγνωρισμένο ως η Άυλη Πολιτιστική Κληρονομιά από την UNESCO.

 

 

Το φεστιβάλ ξεκίνησε  όχι πολύ μακριά από την πρωτεύουσα στις 5 Μαρτίου 2018.

Αυτή η εκδήλωση είναι γεμάτη με παραδοσιακά τραγούδια, χορούς και εκδηλώσεις άλογα και έχει γίνει ένα από τα πιο δημοφιλή γεγονότα στη Μογγολία που τραβά την προσοχή τόσο των ντόπιων όσο και των ξένων ταξιδιωτών.

Οι Καζακστάνοι είναι νομάδες που εκπαιδεύουν τους Golden Eagles για το κυνήγι ανταγωνίζονται για να επιδείξουν τον αετό ο οποίος  είναι ο πιο εξειδικευμένος στο να πιάσει τη λεία και να ακολουθήσει την εντολή του  ιδιοκτήτη του.

85ο Φεστιβάλ Λεμονιού στο Μεντόν της Γαλλίας

To φεστιβάλ λεμονιού διεξάγεται κάθε Φεβρουάριο στην πόλη Menton της Γαλλίας. Πρόκειται για ένα από τα πιο ιδιόμορφα φεστιβάλ του κόσμου με παράδοση δεκαετιών.

Διαρκεί 15 ημέρες και οι δρόμοι της πόλης γεμίζουν γιγαντιαίες κατασκευές φτιαγμένες από λεμόνι, μουσικά συγκροτήματα και διάφορες εκδηλώσεις για μικρά και… μεγάλα παιδιά.

Καρναβάλι του Binche, Βέλγιο

 

Το καρναβάλι της βελγικής πόλης συγκαταλέγεται στην λίστα με την Κληρονομιά Παραδόσεων της UNESCO και περιλαμβάνει περίπου 1.000 άνδρες της πόλης, οι οποίοι επιλέγονται για να μεταμορφωθούν σε Gilles, ένα είδος κλόουν που προχωρά στην πόλη από το βράδυ μέχρι τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες κατά την διάρκεια των εκδηλώσεων.

Ο  Gilles εμφανίζεται στο κέντρο του Binche, χορεύει στον ήχο των τύμπανων και απομακρύνει τα κακά πνεύματα με ραβδιά.

Έπρεπε να ανοίξει ένας δρόμος το 1944 για να ανακαλυφθεί αυτή η φυλή των Μιάο στην Ν.Κίνα!!

Αριθμούν κάτι παραπάνω από 7 εκατ. και αυτή την εποχή έχουν ένα αλλιώτικο φεστιβάλ και προβάλλουν την κουλτούρα τους με αυτό τον πρωτότυπο τρόπο.

Χρησιμοποιώντας κέρατα ζώων πλέκουν τα μαλλιά τους πάνω στα κέρατα τα στερεώνουν με άσπρες κορδέλες και περιμένουν τα αγόρια των διπλανών χωριών να της επιλέξουν για νύφες ……

Tet Holiday – Βιετνάμ

Το Tet Holiday είναι το νέο έτος για τους Βιετναμέζους με “tet” που σημαίνει “φεστιβάλ”.

Tο Tet Holiday πέφτει την πρώτη νύχτα της νέας σελήνης τον πρώτο μήνα του Σεληνιακού Ημερολογίου.

Οι άνθρωποι βλέπουν αυτή τη στιγμή ως χρόνο ανανέωσης και ξεχνούν τα παλιά προβλήματα και ξεκινούν εκ νέου.

Το Tet Nguyen Dan είναι το πλήρες όνομα για το Tet Holiday meaning “Γιορτή του Πρώτου Πρωινού της Πρώτης Ημέρας”.

Κορφιάτικα Πετεγολέτσια (κουτσομπολιά)

Ένα από τα στοιχεία του Κερκυραϊκού Καρναβαλιού είναι τα  ή πέτε γόλια ή πετεγόλια (κουτσομπολιά), που βασίζονται στην Κερκυραϊκή διάλεκτο και κάθε χρόνο παίζονται σε υπαίθρια σκηνή, στην κεντρική αγορά της παλιάς πόλης στην Πίνια.

Είναι ένα θεατρικό είδος που μοιάζει πάρα πολύ με την COMMEDIA DELL’ ARTE, και είχε καλλιεργήσει ο αξέχαστος θεατρικός συγγραφέας Θεόδωρος Ζαμάνης.

Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της συγγραφής τους σπονδυλώνεται από σατυρικά δεκαπεντασύλλαβα. Παρουσιάζονται από ηθοποιούς-παρουσιαστές και στο πνεύμα τους εμπερικλείουν αναδρομές εθίμων, παραδοσιακούς τύπους παλιών Κερκυραίων και περισσότερο απ΄ όλα κορφιάτικη διάλεκτο.

Το πρόγραμμα διανθίζεται με ελαφρά ή σατυρικά τραγούδια ντόπιας ως επί το

Waitangi day…ή αλλιώς η Εθνική Επέτειος των Νεοζηλανδών…

Waitangi, σημαίνει Νερά (Wai) που κάνουν θόρυβο, αλλά κατά μία αλλη μετάφραση, νερά που κλαίνε…

Και σίγουρα κλάψανε πολύ οι Μαορί, όταν ανακάλυψαν πως η συνθήκη που υπογράφτηκε ανάμεσα σε 40 αρχηγούς διαφόρων φυλών (και αργότερα 500 ακόμα) και στους Άγγλους στις 6/2/1840 στην Ακτή των Νησιών (bay of islands) στο Βόρειο Νησί, δεν έγινε σεβαστή από τους αποικιοκράτες Βρεττανούς, ενώ εκείνοι την δέχονταν ως ιερή…

Up Helly Aa Viking festival kicks off in Shetland

Το «Up Helly Aa» είναι ένα θρυλικό φεστιβάλ Βίκινγκς που λαμβάνει χώρα στη Σκωτία κάθε χρόνο !

Τα ρεαλιστικά κοστούμια με τα όπλα, τα ομαδικά τραγούδια και η πλήρης καύση ενός πλοίου, ήταν μόνο η αρχή μιας νύχτας γεμάτης ποτό, χορό και διασκέδαση. Όλες οι ομάδες των «Βίκινγκ» είναι γνωστές ως «Ομάδες Jarl» και επικεφαλής είναι ένας εκλεγμένος Guizer Jarl.

Mπαμπού ..άχυρο και αναμετρήσεις

Το Magh Bihu festival στο Morigaon της Ινδίας λαμβάνει χώρα κάθε τέτοια εποχή,  σηματοδοτώντας το τέλος των αγροτικών εργασιών!

 

 

Κατασκευές από άχυρο και μπαμπού, ταύροι που μάχονται για το χρηματικό έπαλθο των αφεντικών τους, ψαράδες που με αυτοσχέδιες κατασκευές ψαρεύουν και προσφορές για να ευχαριστήσουν για την καλή σοδειά που είχαν οι παραγωγές τους!
