Break the ice – To “σπάσιμο του πάγου”

.

Meaning: To end conflict or initiate friendship.

Origin: This phrase originates from the 1580s, referring to the carving of ice to create passages for ships on trade routes. Oftentimes, the ships would get stuck in the ice during the winter. The receiving country would send small ships tobreak the ice’ in order to make way for the trade ships.

24FREEZE1-jumbo.jpg

“Why We Shout In Anger”

38008021_2164949350310277_4320008402739658752_n

A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take bath found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples smiled ‘n asked.

‘Why do people shout in anger shout at each other?’

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout.’

‘But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner.’ asked the saint Continue reading

Gianni Rodari – The Young Prawn

One day… A young prawn though: – ‘Why in my family all the people walk in reverse? I want to learn how to walk straight forward, just like frogs… and my tail shall fall if I do not succeed!’ –

He started to train secretly, amongst the rocks of the native river, and in the first days, the deed was costing him loads of energies: he wandered everywhere, he was hurting his shield and he would also step a foot onto another. Nevertheless, little by little, things started to get better, because you can learn everything, if you really wish.

Once upon a time it was a shepherd’s family. They had all their sheep together in a corral. They fed them, cared for them and grazed them.

Somewhere, the sheep were trying to break it.

The oldest shepherd came and said,

“Oh, sheep unconsciously and arrogant, do not you know that out there the plains are full of dangers? Only here is plenty of water, food, and above all, protection from the wolves. “

In general, this was enough to hinder the sheep’s “freedom”.

Hydra: a pilgrimage to Leonard Cohen’s Greek island retreat

The tiny Greek island that so enchanted Leonard Cohen in the 1960s still captivates today.

Greece is a good place
to look at the moon, isn’t it?
You can read by moonlight
You can read on the terrace
You can see a face
As you saw it when you were young

Cohen wrote the poem Days of Kindness about his girlfriend and muse Marianne Ihlen, and their years spent here.

The Mules of Hydra Island, Greece

Everywhere, that is, except for Hydra.

Spires of the fireweed.. Ian Emberson

Fireweed is a bush that takes on a bright red colour in autumn

Spires of the fireweed on the fretted sky –
Tints of magenta on tranquility,
Do you feel nurture for the life within,
The burst of bloom that yields your progeny.
Do you have sense of flowering’s fleeting glow,
Bearing its part in continuity
To charge the seed and rip its casing wall
And float its fluff upon the autumn wind?…

Book of Hours – Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

Intentional Peer Support

If I could write a poem about hope
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about connection, worldview, mutual responsibility, and
moving towards not away from.

If I could write a poem about social justice,
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about inclusion of vast and different personal stories, our views, cultures,
values, experiences, knowledge, uncommon and common sense, our ideas.

If I could write a poem about relationships,
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about challenging ourselves to see and think differently
to learn and grow together.

If I could write a poem about compassion,
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about acknowledging and sharing our power
while still daring to be powerful.
It would be about sensitivity, self definitions and self determination.

If I could write a poem about listening differently,
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about tuning into one another,
suspending what we think we know
in order to discover what we didn’t
It would be about a commitment to be patient
with the process of relating and each other.

If I could write a poem about community,
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about prioritizing our relationships
in the family and in our communities
as we define our families, as we remain apart of community.

If I could write a poem about vision,
I’d call it Intentional Peer Support.
It would be about a new vision of interacting with peers
forgetting what we don’t want, envisioning what we do,
living well in the present, and creating a better tomorrow.

If I could write a poem about Intentional Peer Support,
It would be about social change
I’d call it social change.

Ñain An sculptures: New secrets revealed at ancient Chan Chan

The discovery of 17 wooden statues at Chan Chan are enough to change our understanding of the Chan Chan urban centre. Embedded in the walls of the later Ñain An complex, also known as Bandelier, the figures are thought to have bid farewell to the deceased leaders.

Is It Fashion, or Is It Art? Roberto Capucci’s Sculpture Dresses

Capucci is one of the most important designers in post-WW2 Italy. He opened his first salon in 1950, when he was only 20 years old, and achieved international success very quickly. Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe were among the celebrities who wore his dresses. His Nine Dresses dress featured famously in a 1950s Cadillac ad, too.

As Nine Dresses shows, his works have been highly sculptural since the beginning. They’re highly three-dimensional even when no one is wearing them. Many are based on an unusual, box-shaped silhouette. His works are highly geometric, and they have also been compared to origami. Continue reading

People, not only as forms, but also through the environment in which they live, nature, cities and villages, churches and monasteries, were some of the topics he recorded for posterity with his camera. Tloupas treated photography as a creative art, using his personal aesthetics of images and his deep belief in the importance of research.

World Bioethics Day – Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Βιοηθικής

“In our world where life can be easily aborted or euthanized, cloned, altered, or even killed for the sake of ‘cure,’ we desperately need pioneers to go before us and lay the framework for prudent decision making.

The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity is courageously leading the way, helping to realign our culture’s moral compass.”

Joni Eareckson Tada, Joni & Friends

Harriet Powers : Bible Quilt and Pictorial Quilt

Harriet Powers. Pictorial quilt. 1895-98. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

When the second wave feminist movement in the 1970s brought domestic art into the discussion of art history, textiles became a central topic. This led to the rediscovery of Harriet Powers, whose two surviving quilts currently hang in the Smithsonian and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Powers, born a slave in Georgia in 1837, created the quilts after she was Continue reading

“The whole universe is in a glass of wine”

A poet once said, “The whole universe is in a glass of wine.” We will probably never know in what sense he meant that, for poets do not write to be understood. But it is true that if we look at a glass of wine closely enough we see the entire universe.

Hesiod’s version of the myth, Pandora is made of earth and water.  Vase painters sometimes showed Pandora being born from the earth and ‘Pandora’ was also a cult name for Gaia, the earth goddess.

As well as expressing the end of a perfect time, the myth is probably related Continue reading

“My stolen childhood; understanding the Trokosi system”

How girls are donated to shrines as sex slaves in Ghana

In certain communities in Ghana, Benin and Togo, underage girls are handed to shrines as sex slaves. This is their chilling story.

What is Trokosi?

Trokosi is practiced till this day in certain communities in Benin, Togo and Ghana—even though it was declared illegal in Ghana in 1998.

It is a system where adolescent girls are herded to shrines to become slaves.

It is believed that if they don’t serve in those shrines as Trokosis, their family members will be afflicted with strange ailments and eventually die. Continue reading

Puppets in Theater – Bernd Ogrodnik

And when we feel that these fragile figures, attached to silken threads, have a heartbeat of their own – that they are able to express our deepest emotions, joys and fears – then we experience the true magic of Puppet Theatre.

Who is Bernd Ogrodnik?

Born 1961 in Germany, Bernd Ogrodnik founded his company (formerly known as Alchemilla Puppetworks) in 1986 while living in Iceland.

Bernd works as a performer, designer, builder, teacher and director.

An Amy Winehouse hologram is set to tour worldwide in 2019

But some have called to let her ‘rest in peace’

Continuing the trend of digitally resurrecting dead musicians (whether they like it or not), a hologram of Amy Winehouse is set to tour worldwide in 2019, with remastered songs, a live band, and “theatrical stagecraft”.

The decision is a pretty strange one to say the least. On the one hand, it offers those who never got to see the singer perform live a chance to witness her act, but on the other it raises issues about using artists’ music (and their literal image) without their consent.

The Blessed Damozel – Dante Gabriel Rossetti

The Blessed Damozel” is perhaps the best known poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti as well as the title of some of his best known paintings. The poem was first published in 1850 in the Pre-Raphaelite journal The Germ. Rossetti subsequently revised the poem twice and republished it in 1856, 1870 and 1873. [1]

The poem was partially inspired by Edgar Allan Poe‘s poem “The Raven“, with its depiction of a lover grieving on Earth over the death of his loved one. Rossetti chose to represent the situation in reverse. The poem describes Continue reading

Never have I aimed for glory,
nor endeavored that my story
be for Memory destined.
I have loved my worlds appeasing,
subtly fleeting, gently pleasing,
all with bubbles of a kind.

Tom Noddy’s Bubble Magic has been featured on televisions shows all over the world over the years. In some early performances Tom used cigarettes but that was long ago and he has developed a handheld fog generator whose fuel is food grade glycerin.

An episode of a BBC mathematics programme focused on the math of minimal forms and they asked if I could contribute. We set up in a small theater and exchanged ideas. They filmed the results and edited it beautifully into their programme. I’m very pleased with this one.

Giant fights and giant’s causeway – Το Μονοπάτι του Γίγαντα

“You are standing on, or are about to visit, one of my favourite places. The jewel in the crown of the fabulous coast of Antrim. A site of World Heritage and therefore ranked alongside Mount Everest and the Giant Redwoods of California for it’s importance to humankind.Volcanic activity helped Finn Mc Cool forge this wonder of the World some 60 Million years ago. It is today the habitat of rare plants and animals. Please treat their home with the pride and the care it deserves.” –   Dr David Bellamy

“The Giant’s Causeway is the aftermath of volcanic crashing, burning and cooling,” Eleanor explains. “An epic 60-million-year-old legacy to lava. Over 40,000 basalt columns. Interlocked.

“It’s no wonder this place is a Unesco World Heritage Site because beyond the mindboggling beauty, the Causeway is our portal into Earth’s most ancient past,” she concludes.

Giant fights

Finn is having trouble with someone across the water. The Scottish giant Benandonner is threatening Ireland. An enraged Finn grabs chunks of the Antrim coast and throws them into the sea. The rock forms a path for Finn to follow and teach Benandonner a lesson.

The symbolism of The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle

The Naked Truth

One day the truth went down to the lake for a morning swim. He took off his glorious white robes and jumped into the refreshing cool water. While the truth was swimming, a lie came along and saw the beautiful attire of the truth laying there in the grass.

The lie decided he’d take off his old stinky ragged garments and put on the truth’s beautiful clothing. So the lie stole the truth’s clothes. Can you imagine that?

A LIE DRESSED UP LIKE THE TRUTH! The lie went into town parading Continue reading

Unforgettable – A Walk with Alzheimers

Do not ask me to remember,

Don’t try to make me understand,

Let me rest and know you’re with me,

Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

I’m confused beyond your concept,

I am sad and sick and lost.

All I know is that I need you

To be with me at all cost.

Do not lose your patience with me,

Do not scold or curse or cry.

I can’t help the way I’m acting,

Can’t be different though I try.

Just remember that I need you,

That the best of me is gone,

Please don’t fail to stand beside me,

Love me ’til my life is done.

Cecil Beaton – «Night and Day: 1930s Fashion and Photographs»

Night and Day: 1930s Fashion & Photographs will present the over 100 of the most influential day and evening fashions ensembles of the decade, from fantasy evening wear to beach pyjamas, complemented by photographs of the stars who championed them. The 1930s ushered in the utilitarianism of World War II after the excesses of the 1920s. Continue reading
